I've found even just lying in bed with the light out is good for me. Sometimes my body just doesn't want to sleep for whatever reason but I still calmly lie there. I don't worry about whether I need the sleep but just rest in the dark
Also Dr Josh Axe says that it is beneficial, if you can, to go to sleep on your left hand side because that helps with digestion, and then if possible roll on to your right side if you wake during the night because that helps with your heart and lungs.
The important thing is to lie there calmly. If you stress about being awake, then you're not resting, but if you can relax into it, you're still getting many of the benefits of light sleep. I've got a longer post about this very topic in the works.
I've never entirely understood this theory about lying on left or right sides: I've often heard it, but never seen any convincing justification for it. That said, if you find it helps you sleep, then why not? That's my normal sleep pattern.

I shall look forward to the longer post.
I'm getting quite skilled at just lying in bed :)
I'm not good on the right side/left side bit. It depends how much space the dog has as to which way I sleep :)
